Lionsgate is handling the Monopoly movie

It appears Lionsgate is up to bat for Mattel Films, as it seems to be taking on the responsibility of handling the Monopoly movie. We already knew it was happening, as many of Mattel’s products are getting movie adaptations as a means to bolster its presence.

Following the wildly successful Barbie, Mattel’s partnered with a different studio to make Monopoly into a film. What it could be about is still up in the air, but it all is likely going to boil down to who Lionsgate taps to direct. Odds are this movie is a ways away, considering there are many more toy brands that could fare better at the box office than a board game that always ends in frustration.

The idea of Lionsgate taking up the task isn’t too shocking, considering how the production company has swooped up Entertainment One from Hasbro for a cool $500 million ahead of the announcement, according to Variety. Additionally, they’ve also worked with Hasbro before, distributing 2017’s My Little Pony: The Movie in the US.

On top of the Lionsgate partnership, we also have a few other toy brand movies confirmed like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, and Barney. So far, there aren’t any clues about when Monopoly could make it from the board game to big screen.
