Blue Beetle director to direct buddy comedy starring Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista

After hitting number 1 at the box in its debut weekend, knocking Greta Gerwig’s Barbie down to second with Blue Beetle, director Ángel Manuel Soto has already found his next film. He’s also co-writing and directing a Transformers spin-off for Paramount Pictures.

As reported by TheWrap, MGM tapped the Charm City Kings director to direct The Wrecking Crew, which is set to star Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, and Dave Bautista, best-known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The film’s overall plot is under wraps, but TheWrap’s sources tell them that it’s a buddy action comedy with the duo.

IGN also confirmed that this deal was made before SAG-AFTRA joined WGA in striking over payment, AI, and streaming residuals. On top of the A-list hero actors, Johnathan Topper.

When it comes to Momoa, outside of his superhero role as Aquaman, he’s been keeping busy with projects like, as well as the main villain in this year’s Fast X. In our review, we found the film underwhelming as a “grounded” experience, which director Louis Leterrier claimed it would be, but Momoa certainly steals the show.

Wrestler-turned-actor Bautista, meanwhile, has also found a good deal of success in his Hollywood career. Outside of Drax, he also plays roles in Riddick, Blade Runner 2049, My Spy, and recently, M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin.

We’re sure we’ll hear more about Soto’s latest project in the future, likely after the strikes subside… whenever that is.
