Barbie is a fashionable smash-hit at the weekend box office

Yesterday, we reported on Greta Gerwig’s PG-13 smash-hit Barbie managing to net $70.5 million at the domestic box office. Well, now the film’s earned even more, and the staggering international numbers are in, too, and by golly, Barbie can afford another dream house.

Per Box Office Mojo, Gerwig’s pastel picture has net $155 million domestically over the course of the weekend and internationally, it’s $182 million, which adds up to a staggering $337 million during its weekend premiere. Part of this large-scale attendance might be the whole Barbenheimer fever people seem to be seething online, but the other side of it could be the novelty of how long it’s taken for the film to hit theaters.

Breaking it all down, China appears to be the weakest link at the box office, bringing Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel’s toy-based flick $8.2 million over the weekend, but the UK’s $22.9 more than makes up the sluggish Chinese market. As with any theatrical release, it will tapper off slowly, but with a strong performance like this, it’ll make bank, having already turned a profit, with its budget estimated to be around $128 to $145 million.

Barbie’s release proved so fruitful it’s the biggest debut of the year so far, and with a number like so early on, we’d guess it’d take a Marvel or a high-profile Disney film to claw its way to the top.
